Abstract: The paper will examine the ways in which forms of identification build on visions of history, comparing France and Russia, with particular emphasis on the "post-revolutionary" periods of early nineteenth-century France, and late twentieth and early twenty-first century Russia. The three particular themes to be studied are: 1) The persistence of past identifications; 2) Contestations over past identifications; 3) Cultural canons as a focus of identifications.
