Title: "Power Plays, Multiple Identifications, and Citizenships"

Authors: Fred Constant and Janet Sturgeon

Abstract: We are going to investigate a set of three interrelated thematic questions in the context of contemporary Martinique, Russia, and China. The first concerns how identifications work as power, i.e., how do they re/produce prevailing power relationships, structure social relationships, and empower people against official identification projects. The second question draws on the observation that there are always multiple identities in play in any social context. We would like to at least, at first, describe what the relationships are among these multiple identifications, and then relate them to our analysis of the equally multiple plays of power. Third, we wish to analyze the relationship between minority identities and the official universalizing project of modern citizenship. We also intend to use the common phenomenon of elections to assess similarities and differences across these three contexts.
